Research
The Center for Social Justice Research, Teaching and Service (CSJ) supports university faculty, students and staff in engaging in collaborative, community-based research (CBR). CBR is research that is conducted with and for, not on, members of a community. Community-based Research is a collaborative enterprise that creates partnerships between university and community partners.
CBR can also be a process that combines classroom learning and skills development with social action to empower community groups to shape their own futures. In this model, CBR emphasizes students’ development of knowledge and skills that prepare them to be active creators and effective agents in their civic participation. To learn more about CBR, we recommend reading Strand and Colleagues (2004) Community-based Research and Higher Education.
At CSJ we offer support to our faculty and students in a number of ways. We have a number of Georgetown University initiatives such as our handbooks on community-based learning and research, brochures on D.C.’s communities, student internships, and faculty training. Further, we work with other universities around the District through Community Research and Learning (CoRAL) Network.
CSJ offers a number of supports for faculty/staff and students engaging in CBR:
