Faculty
Dear Faculty Colleagues:
Welcome to the Center for Social Justice!
Here is a brief introduction to the Center’s pedagogical, curricular, and research programs. We invite your participation in them.
Research
The Center supports research that is conducted “with and for, not on, members of a community”; what is referred to as community-based research (CBR). Faculty support for CBR is essential at Georgetown because many faculty envision it as a process that combines classroom learning and skills development with social action to empower community groups to shape their own futures. Curriculum and Pedagogy
Through its curriculum and pedagogy work, CSJ supports the incorporation of social justice themes into courses, and works with faculty to employ experiential learning in general and community-based learning in particular. We seek to build a curriculum and support pedagogies that integrate rigorous disciplinary and interdisciplinary study of social justice issues and community-based intellectual work, ultimately to enhance students' engagement with fundamental questions of social justice.
Community and Public Service
Faculty members can also find through CSJ opportunities for themselves and their students to engage in important community outreach. CSJ’s programs dedicated to community and public service uphold the Jesuit mission to educate men and women for others by engaging Georgetown students, staff, and faculty in community-based work in order to deepen their understanding of community and social justice, and to explore the link between service and academic theory.
