Habitat for Humanity Alternative Spring Break

Georgetown University Habitat for Humanity

2008 Collegiate Challenge Spring Break Trip

March 1st-8th

Slidell, LA / Sebring, FL

· Who?

48 motivated and energetic Georgetown students ready for a week of hard work and fun.

· What?

A week of working with Habitat for Humanity.  In Slidell, we will be working with East St. Tammany HFH, and in Sebring, we will be working with Highlands County HFH.  Since its founding in 1976, Habitat for Humanity International has been committed to providing simple, decent, affordable housing for those in need of shelter.  During the week, we will work and interact with other Habitat volunteers, future homeowners, and local leaders.  No construction knowledge is required for participation in the trip. The workday will wrap up around 3:00 p.m. and the late afternoons and evenings will be free for group activities, reflection and exploring the local areas.  For more information, visit http://www.habitat.org/ccyp/col_chal/default.aspx

· Where?

During the week we will be staying at volunteer centers provided by the local affiliates and working on homes in the nearby areas.

· When?

We will leave Georgetown on the morning of Saturday, March 1st.  The workweek will be Monday through Friday and participants can plan on being back to campus by Saturday, March 8th.  All participants should also participate in a one-day build with GU Habitat before the trip, if possible.  There will be a mandatory pre-trip orientation session on Saturday, February 9th.

· How?

We will be traveling in rental vans.  All participants will be expected to contribute $180 towards the cost of the trip.  This fee covers all food, lodging and transportation for the week.  If the fee presents a problem for anybody, please let us know and special arrangements can be made.

Regular applications are due on Friday, January 25 by 5:00 PM and can be dropped off at the Center for Social Justice in Poulton Hall.  Early action applications for drivers (students 21+) are due on Tuesday, December 11.  Drivers can also apply at the regular deadline.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at guhabitatspringbreak@gmail.com.
