Service

The Center for Social Justice provides students with opportunities to address issues of social justice on the local, national and international levels. With full respect for the diversity of faith and philosophy on campus, CSJ upholds the distinctiveness of the Ignatian service tradition at Georgetown.

Community involvement, integral to the Center's mission, links academic work with practical experience and encourages students to consider how they can use their education to respond to human needs around them. There are numerous ways to become involved in the community to learn from as well as to serve others.

CSJ affirms the importance of integrating service with academics and personal action by helping students develop a balanced approach to their own education. With this in mind, the following goals have been established:

  • Advance the Center's commitment to addressing community needs through direct service, advocacy and public education;
  • Support co-curricular public and community service, especially in its relevance to the moral, professional, civic and social development of the Georgetown University student body;
  • Assist faculty members interested in developing community-based teaching and learning initiatives;
  • Assist faculty in developing and conducting research related to community-based intellectual work;
  • Help Georgetown students develop responsible career choices based on an educated understanding of the issues facing our society;
  • Support the development of the Center's community partnerships, with a focus on assisting in the development of long-term solutions to pressing social problems of our times, and on drawing upon the unique setting of the nation?s capital to address the particular concerns of the residents of the District of Columbia, as well as those of the national and world communities.
