VPS Links: Children's Issues

  •  America's Promise--The Alliance for Youth:  National organization led by General Colin Powell dedicated to mobilizing the nation to ensure the youth have access to the resources they need to become successful adults.  It works with non-profit organizations to provide mentors, ensure safe places for children outside of school, tutor and encourage community service.

  • Best Buddies:Nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of people with mental retardation by providing oportunities for socialization and employment.  Its college program pairs people with mental retardation in one-to-one friendships with college students.  Georgetown's chapter is headquarterd here with VPS.  Stop by B-01 St. Mary's Hall for more details!

  • Big Brothers Big Sisters of America: BBBSA is the oldest mentoring organization serving youth in the country. BBBSA has provided one-to-one mentoring relationships between adult volunteers and children at risk since 1904. It currently serves over 100,000 children and youth in more than 500 agencies throughout all of the United States.

  • Children's Defense Fund:  "Leave no child behind."  A private, nonprofit organization, CDF provides a voice for all children in America, who cannot vote or lobby for themselves.  It pays special attention to poor or minority children and those children with disabilities.  It works through education, lobbying and volunteerism.

  • Kids Campaigns: An information action center for people of all types who want to act on behalf of kids.  The site provides useful ideas, advice, links and other resources for getting involved.

  • Orphanage Outreach:  A non-profit organization working with orphanages in the Carribean.  Volunteer internships range from one week, three weeks to eight weeks for people from all background
  • U.S. Fund for UNICEF:  The mission of the U.S. Fund for UNICEF is to promote the survival, protection, and development of all children worldwide through fundraising, advocacy, and education. The U.S. Fund for UNICEF is one of 37 national committees set up around the world to raise money for UNICEF, which works in 158 countries and territories providing health care, clean water, improved nutrition, and education to millions of children in Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East.
