Help us take students Beyond the Surface, to Real Talk, Real Action.  Beyond the Surface is a new retreat being developed a Georgetown University. We are currently seeking application from all interested students, and are hoping you will join us in this important mission.

Beyond the Surface Mission Statement
Given that Georgetown University aspires to prepare its students to be leaders of the global community, we must challenge each other to actively embrace the ideals of the university, to create citizen leaders who will celebrate and explore a diverse community through education as they serve as men and women for others. To address these issues, offer a new retreat experience to take place over the weekend of March 19-21, 2004.

Goals of Beyond the Surface:

• Increasing awareness of our privilege in society.
• Gaining a sense of social responsibility as change agents in the Georgetown community as well as the larger society.
• Challenging our assumptions and beliefs about our own values and priorities as well as our general view of society.
• Creating a personal action plan to motivate education beyond the retreat.

Background on Beyond the Surface
This past October, faculty and staff members from a cross-section of Georgetown University departments came together to form a subcommittee of the Diversity Working Group in order to design a social justice retreat experience. After discussions with countless Georgetown undergraduates it became clear to us that not enough was being done on this campus to address issues such as privilege, prejudice, oppression, inequality, and stereotypes. In an effort to create an experience that addresses these issues and espouses the goals set forth in Georgetown University's Mission Statement, the Diversity Working Group is creating a retreat open to all Georgetown undergraduate students that provides the opportunity to study and reflect upon Social Justice issues.
