4th Credit Option for Social Action

The 4th Credit Option for Social Action allows students to integrate their work with disadvantaged and underserved individuals or groups in the community with a particular academic course. Together with the facilitation of the professor of the course and with a supervisor at the site, students are challenged to find the connection between the subject matter and the experience of the situation in the community. Students will engage in an orientation to Experiential Education - CBL and to the Washington, D.C. community; various activities to reflect upon issues of social justice; and discuss with peers what they are experiencing and learning from their various experiences.

The 4th Credit Option for Social Action consists of a student’s commitment to:

  • 40 hours per semester, including approximately four hours per week with the CBO;
  • setting and meeting learning goals agreed upon by the student, the agency and the professor;
  • attending an initial orientation;
  • participating in three discussion sessions; and
  • writing three reflective essays (to be graded by the professor).

Students in this scenario are often seeking a deeper level of learning from their community experience than the typical volunteer. In essence, CBO’s are co-instructors of the students, and for this work, the student adds one credit to the 3 credit course.
