Job Description
The Program in Education is an initiative that seeks to develop a community of faculty, students, and staff who share an interest in k-12 education. One of the primary goals of the program is to develop and implement a program in education leading to an academic minor in Education. The Academic Director of the program is Prof. Heather Voke. The program is supported by the Center for New Designs in Learning and Scholarship (CNDLS) and the Center for Social Justice Research, Teaching and Service (CSJ). The program office is located within the CSJ in Poulton Hall. The Program assistant will be supervised by the Academic Director
The core responsibilities of the assistant are to a. create awareness of the program and its activities; and b. provide administrative support for these activities. Specific responsibilities include:
1. Maintain and update content on Program website a. Find upcoming events on campus, in DC area relevant to education; maintain calendar b. Add compiled information as it become available (2 below).
2. Gather and compile information needed for Program a. Education courses: descriptions, how often taught b. Faculty, research interests, and contact information c. Student organizations in education on campus d. Education initiatives on campus (Ward 7); contact information e. Education resources on campus f. Post-graduation options for students g. Useful links for students and faculty
3. Create/maintain e-mail list of faculty, students, other relevant personnel on campus
4. Compile information for/distribute monthly e-newsletter on education to be distributed through e-mail list a. Relevant education information (links to a few timely articles on relevant topic) b. Upcoming events c. Faculty activities related to education (publications, conferences attended, etc.) d. Student activities related to education e. Student/faculty/organization profiles
5. Coordinate communication and activities with student groups in education out of the Center for Social Justice (such as GOLE, DC Reads, and DC Schools)(such as Our Education)
6. Assist Director with planning/arrangements for community-building activities for program on campus a. For instance, make room reservations, plan food, post announcements, etc. for activities such as films/discussion, research presentations, forums w/DC school teachers, field trips, etc.
Job Requirements
The ideal applicant should have a. general knowledge of education issues in the U.S. generally and D.C. in particular; b. experience with an education-focused group/activity/course on campus (such as GOLE, DC Reads, ASK, Foundations of Education etc); and c. experience working (or volunteering) with youth and/or education organizations in the community. Applicant should also have strong, professional communication skills; ability to work semi-independently; experience with basic computer and web-based technologies (such as word processing, databases, and web searches); and a record of reliability.
