Habitat for Humanity Alternative Spring Break
Georgetown University Habitat for Humanity
2010 Collegiate Challenge Spring Break Trip
Habitat for Humanity International, a well established program, works to provide affordable housing for those in need of shelter. This Alternative Spring Break trip works directly with the program, in order to help produce sufficient living conditions to those in need. Students on the trip mix work and fun for a week of helping others, where late afternoons and evenings are free for activities and group reflection. In addition to working directly with Habitat volunteers, and local homeowners, groups will also be able to explore the local areas. No previous Habitat involvement or construction experience is necessary, only a willing set of hands.
Since its founding in 1976, Habitat for Humanity International has been committed to providing simple, decent, affordable housing for those in need of shelter. During the week, we will work and interact with other Habitat volunteers, future homeowners, and local leaders. No construction knowledge is required for participation in the trip. The workday will wrap up around 3:00 p.m. and the late afternoons and evenings will be free for group activities, reflection and exploring the local areas. For more information, visit their homepage!
Where?
For Spring Break 2010, we will be traveling to Dade City, FL and Mobile, AL. During the week we will be staying at volunteer centers provided by the local affiliates and working on homes in the nearby areas.
How?
We will be traveling in rental vans. All participants will be expected to contribute $200 towards the cost of the trip, with the exception of those who agree to serve as drivers for the duration of the week. The drivers' fee will be $170. Trip fees cover all food, lodging and transportation for the week. (Drivers must be Georgetown van certified, over 21, and be comfortable with highway driving. For information on becoming van certified, please see the Risk Management website.)
